UNISDR subscribes institutional cooperation frameworks with regional and sub-regional federations of municipalities.
Recently UNISDR regional office for the Americas signed cooperation frameworks with the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Associations of Local Governments (FLACMA by its Spanish acronym), signed by Guillermo Tapia Nicola, executive secretary of FLACMA and the Federation of Municipalities of the Central American Isthmus (FEMICA by its Spanish acronym), signed by Alvaro Jimenez, president of FEMICA, both frameworks are intended to promote a culture of resilience according to the priorities of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). The objectives of these collaboration frameworks are: to encourage, promote and disseminate information on the 2010-2011 ISDR global campaign, Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready, promoting the HFA and disaster risk reduction (DRR), jointly promoting DRR and climate change adaptation and facilitating training on disaster reduction.
DRR Training for Mexico City Government

The Government of Mexico City in collaboration with the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and The Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction Initiative (CADRI) organized training on disaster risk reduction for employees of the Federal District (DF) from August 23 to 26 of the present year. In this first initiative, the Federal Government aims to prepare its authorities in this field.

Additionally it is planned to train 10 000 staff in this specialty. Marcelo Ebrard, head of city government, said "the City has high degree of vulnerability to natural phenomena, so that the implementation of this course is to expand the capacity of officials to counteract the consequences to these phenomena”.

Regional Workshop "Cities in the Caribbean are preparing"
OXFAM, CDEMA and the Dominican Institute for Integral Development (IDDI by its Spanish acronym) with the support of ECHO held from August 4 to 6,  a regional workshop within the framework of  the Global Campaign for Disaster Reduction 2010-2011: Making Cities Resilient, My city is Getting Ready" with more than 70 participants from 19 countries from 48 different institutions/organizations aiming to of share knowledge and best urban practices to advance in the disaster risk reduction. In the workshop participated the academia, NGOs, mayors, government officials, National Societies of Red Cross, DIPECHO Project partners from the Caribbean and agencies from the United Nations system.

International Workshop on ENSO, Decadal Variability and Climate Change in South America "Trends, teleconnections and potential impacts" Guayaquil, Ecuador October 12th – 14th of 2010

The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the Climate Variability & Predictability of WCRP, CLIVAR the International Research Centre on El Niño (CIIFEN) and IGBP, are pleased to announced the “ International Workshop on ENSO, Decadal Variability and Climate Change in South America” which will be held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on October 12th-14th.

The objectives of the workshop are: (a) To review the newest and available science on ENSO, decadal variability and Climate Change in South America (SA); (b) To review the estimated trends and changes in ENSO teleconnections in SA; and (c) To discuss on the potential climate impacts for net 10-15 years and their social and economical implications in SA.

It is expected to have the active participation of scientists from South America and relevant scientists from across the world in this workshop. Depending on the mobilization of resources, partial or full support will be available to selected scientists from South America countries. A fee for participation will be fixed in order to contribute to funding for the event.

Panama leads effort to achieve the goal of safe hospitals

Authorities of the Ministry of Health and Social Security Institution (Caja de Seguro Social in Spanish) of Panama signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Pan-American Health Organization/ World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in order to strengthen the coordination in the management of emergencies and disasters. This agreement is part of the Safe Hospitals global strategy and prioritizes a shared agenda to achieve the goal of hospitals safe from disasters by the year 2015.

As part of the Global Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign 2010-2011, led by UNISDR has been launched, with support from UNICEF, IFRC, PAHO and the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO ) The Regional Contest "Disaster Risk Reduction Begins at School." This contest has been designed as a space for entertainment and creativity to raise awareness among children between 5 and 12 years, in order to encourage capacity building for Emergency and Disaster Prevention in education and encourage participation of Children and Youth.

Plan of Action on Safe Hospitals

the 49th Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) approved the final report of the roundtable “Safe Hospitals: A Goal within Our Reach” (Document CD49/22, Add. I). This document recommends that the countries prepare work plans to reach the goal of having hospitals safe from disaster by 2015, and requests the Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB) to submit a progress report to the 50th Directing Council.

Urban Risk Management in Latin America: Compendium of articles
This publication presents a selection of articles carried out within the framework of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and the Urban Risk Thematic Platform in particular.  The thirteen articles included here reflect diverse perspectives and interests surrounding disaster risk in several cities of Latin America.  The authors, real actors from cities both large and small, face tangible issues of disaster risk in distinct settings.
