Introduction

The Regional Platform provides an opportunity to share information and knowledge, while facilitating processes for planning, progress monitoring, collective strategic decision-making and action to enhance the implementation of DRR and the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA); as well as linking international and national efforts including those promoting the integration of climate change adaptation (CCA) in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In addition to defining trends and priority areas for moving forward in the region, the outcomes of the Regional Platform sessions will also serve as input for the upcoming session of the Global Platform for DRR, scheduled for May 2013.

The Fourth Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction Disaster of the Americas (RP14) is being co-organized by the UNISDR Regional Office for the Americas (UNISDR - Americas) and the Republic of Ecuador, through the Secretariat of Risk Management and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The country reiterated its continued support to UNISDR and its commitment to DRR and HFA objectives, and offered to host the event with the support of the RP14 Advisory Council.

The RP14 will be thus held in Guayaquil, Ecuador from May 27 to 29, 2014. Following the experience of the previous session, the structure and contents of the Fourth Session are defined by the Advisory Council, which consists of representatives of intergovernmental organizations in the Americas including CAPRADE, CEPREDENAC, CDEMA, REHU and OAS; key partners of the ISDR system in the region including World Bank, IADB, IFRC, OCHA, PAHO-WHO, UNDP, Technical Donor Group; the Government of Ecuador as host country, the Government of Chile as host country of the previous meeting held in Santiago (Chile) and the UNISDR Regional Office for the Americas.

Ecuador is located in the northwest of South America and is crossed by the equatorial line. It is divided into four regions: Amazon, Andes, Coast and Galapagos.

The Ecuadorian coast allows travelers to experience a striking and unique culture and gastronomy, as well as exciting adventure activities in a region bounded by the Pacific Ocean.

Beaches, coves, savannas and international trade centers such as Guayaquil —the largest and most populated city in Ecuador—, are distinctive features of the Coast region. More Information
