OBANDO, Colombia, October 29, 2013.- The municipality of Obando, under the leadership of mayor Dr. Lucero Nydia Lopez Ospina, is the fourth municipality of the Cauca Valley and the ninth in Colombia to join the Global Campaign "Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready!". Dr. Ospina was the first woman to be elected by popular vote as mayor of this municipality for the period 2012-2015.

The municipality of Obando is located north of the Cauca Valley Department on the flats of the Cauca River Valley and extends over the Central Cordillera. Altitudes range between 917 and 1700 meters above sea level. It has a population of over 14,000 inhabitants in a total area of 213 km2, of which 8.4 sq. km is urban and 162 sq. km rural. The economic activity is focused primarily in the agricultural and livestock sectors.

The registration to the Global Campaign was completed within the framework of the Risk Management Programme in the Cauca Valley, led and funded by the ECOPETROL company, in conjunction with Corporiesgos and the Institute of Education of the Colombian Red Cross Branch of the Cauca Valley. It culminated with a Risk Management diploma with an concentration on urban risk and climate change adaptation, finalized in September 2013 in the municipality of Cartago, with the extensive participation of the municipality of Obando, including several members of the Municipal Risk Management Council.

As the promoter of the Global Campaign in Colombia, I want to extend my thanks to the ECOPETROL company, Corporiesgos and the Institute of Education of the Colombian Red Cross Branch of the Cauca Valley for their support and assistance in these types of initiatives. I also wish to extend my sincere congratulations to the municipality of Obando and the Mayor for making the commitment to disaster risk reduction.
