On January 13, 2001, Santa Tecla was severely affected by a powerful earthquake, which caused the loss of many lives and property. This event, however difficult for the city, represented an opportunity to show leadership and move forward in the face of adversity. Ten years after this tragedy Santa Tecla has become a role model city thanks to the commitment of its leaders to improve the Municipality´s preparedness and to reduce vulnerability and exposure to hazards. Is in this context that the Mayor Lic. Oscar Ortiz gave a warmly welcome the Global Campaign “Making Cities Resilient: My city is getting ready”, and decided to join to make of Santa Tecla a Campaign advocate and reference to other municipalities in the country.
