Axe thématique : Investir dans la réduction des risques de catastrophe pour accroître la résilience
Description : In 2015, Canada signed the UN Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), which seeks to substantially reduce disaster losses. The Framework explicitly recognizes youth as agents of change in DRR who have the right to shape their own futures. However, youth remain an underrepresented stakeholder group in disaster risk reduction policy and decisions.

The ResiliencebyDesign Lab, an innovative research lab, at Royal Roads University will host this IGNITE Stage presentation to highlight the critical importance of youth engagement in successfully implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The session will introduce the ResiliencebyDesign Lab’s ongoing research and community-based activities designed to activate youth engagement in disaster risk reduction, and inspire and support youth-generated DRR and resilience building initiatives. These initiatives use methods of social innovation, arts-based expression, and creative action research to achieve more impactful youth engagement. The session will include a short (4 minute) video to showcase these initiatives, and to spark conversation about why it is important to involve and engage youth in disaster risk reduction. Those in attendance -- in person and through social media -- will be invited to share their experiences on meaningfully engaging youth in policy action and collaboratively explore further ways to engage youth that moves forward international commitments to reduce disaster risks and enhance society’s capacity for resilience. The session will conclude with a challenge to participants to respond to the video and presentation by posting notes on the “YOUTH-CHALLENGE” response wall and by tweeting their ideas.
