The Regional Group for Disaster Risk Management for the Latin American and Caribbean Educational Sector invites Ignite Stage:
"Disaster risk management in the educational response to the earthquake in Ecuador (April 16, 2016)"

On April 16, 2016, an earthquake of magnitude, 7.8, impacted Ecuador. About 170,000 children and
adolescents, their teachers, social workers and psychologists were affected, 192 schools were destroyed and
more than a thousand were damaged.
Several regional organizations such as UNICEF, PLAN International, Save the Children, RET International,
deployed staff in the first 48 hours to support the work of situation analysis, inter-sectoral planning of response
and mobilization of funds for the response.
The response strategy of the educational sector "School for all, together we rise", led by the Ministry of
Education, was approved on April 20, 2016. The organizations committed to support the work of the Ministry in
three stages:
Socio-emotional support and recreational activities
Non-formal education and the opening of formal education
Formal education, adjusted curriculum.
Alia Hassan, National Director of Cooperation and International Affairs of the Ministry of Education in Ecuador,
will share with the participants the main achievements and challenges they faced before and during the
response.
