On April 16, 2016, an earthquake of magnitude, 7.8, impacted Ecuador. About 170,000 children and

adolescents, their teachers, social workers and psychologists were affected, 192 schools were destroyed and

more than a thousand were damaged.

Several regional organizations such as UNICEF, PLAN International, Save the Children, RET International,

deployed staff in the first 48 hours to support the work of situation analysis, inter-sectoral planning of response

and mobilization of funds for the response.

The response strategy of the educational sector "School for all, together we rise", led by the Ministry of

Education, was approved on April 20, 2016. The organizations committed to support the work of the Ministry in

three stages:

 Socio-emotional support and recreational activities

 Non-formal education and the opening of formal education

 Formal education, adjusted curriculum.

Alia Hassan, National Director of Cooperation and International Affairs of the Ministry of Education in Ecuador,

will share with the participants the main achievements and challenges they faced before and during the

response.
