The Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas (RP17) brought together delegates from across the Americas to discuss efforts to reduce disaster risks posed by natural and human-induced hazards and to approve a Regional Action Plan (RAP) to meet the United Nations (UN) Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 commitments.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), through its Regional Office for the Americas, is pleased to report that Jose Emilio Morales, producer and protagonist of the video "Disaster Risk Reduction Chile," has been selected as winner of the "Youth and Disaster Risk Reduction" Video-Challenge carried out at the continental level between 3 January 3 and 15 February, 2017.

The photo titled "Earthquake Drill" by Carlos Roberto Márquez Ramos was chosen as the winner of the Call for Disaster Risk Reduction Tools, Good Practices and Photos 2016 "Photo Contest", promoted By the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), through its Regional Office for the Americas.

Media can now register for the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas (RP17), which will take place in Montreal, March 7 to 9, 2017. While every effort will be made to accommodate all media onsite, space is limited and priority will be given to media who register in advance. Registered and accredited media will have the opportunity to engage delegates throughout the event.

Today, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, announced that from March 7-9th 2017, Canada will welcome over 1000 participants from across the Western hemisphere to Montreal, Quebec for the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Second Meeting of Ministers and High Level Authorities on the Sendai Framework.

Today, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, announced that Canada will host the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas in 2017. This meeting will bring together some 1,000 delegates from over 50 member states in the Americas to discuss opportunities for collaboration and coordination in meeting shared objectives to reduce disaster risks in the region and to meet the United Nations' Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) commitments.
