The Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas (RP17) brought together delegates from across the Americas to discuss efforts to reduce disaster risks posed by natural and human-induced hazards and to approve a Regional Action Plan (RAP) to meet the United Nations (UN) Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 commitments.

Disaster Risk Reduction in the Education Sector Indicators Tool
To present a methodology for analysis developed by UNICEF and RET International as part of the Group for Disaster Risk Management in the Education Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean Work Plan that provides quantitative and qualitative information on the state of performance and institutionality of the educational sector in Disaster risk management in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and the lessons learned from its application of three countries in the region.

IGNITE STAGE: IFRC IS PUTTING COMMUNITIES AT THE CENTER OF OUR WORK
The IFRC's approach to community resilience strengthening ensures communities are placed at, and remain at the center of decisions and actions that impact their future and that programs respond to objectives defined by the community. As such, in January 2017, the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement launched a pilot edition of the Guide to Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA), which we will present during out IGNITE Stage presentation on March 9th. The guide comes accompanied with a comprehensive toolkit and aims to encourage a more systematic approach to CEA.

In this space, the young Ecuadorian Lourdes Escobar will present the experience of empowering young people through the implementation of the "Voices of Youth Maps" tool in Esmeraldas, impact zone of the Ecuador earthquake of 2016. This is an initiative implemented by the UNICEF and RET International offices in Ecuador.

"Disaster risk management in the educational response to the earthquake in Ecuador (April 16, 2016)"
On April 16, 2016, an earthquake of magnitude, 7.8, impacted Ecuador. About 170,000 children and adolescents, their teachers, social workers and psychologists were affected, 192 schools were destroyed and more than a thousand were damaged.

Shock-Responsive Social Protection in Latin America and the Caribbean
There is an increasing global recognition on the potential linkages between social protection in responding to and mitigating shocks. Social protection systems in LAC have evolved and expanded substantially in the last few decades, with an increasing percentage of GDP allocated to public social investment. In this light, fairly advanced social protection systems and large-scale safety nets seem to provide a unique opportunity to support shock response in LAC.

Americas to agree on Sendai Framework action plan
Governments from across the Americas are gathering this week in Canada for a high-level conference where they aim to make their vast region more resilient by adopting a plan to curb the risks posed by natural and human-induced hazards. The 5th Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas (RP17), running from Tuesday to Thursday in Montreal, is set to draw delegates from 33 countries following a year in which the region continued to feel the consequences of a strong El Niño and over a thousand lives were lost in the Ecuador earthquake and the onslaught of Hurricane Matthew.

Montreal to host Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas in March 2017
Today, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, announced that from March 7-9th 2017, Canada will welcome over 1000 participants from across the Western hemisphere to Montreal, Quebec for the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Second Meeting of Ministers and High Level Authorities on the Sendai Framework.

Canada to Host Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2017
Today, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, announced that Canada will host the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas in 2017. This meeting will bring together some 1,000 delegates from over 50 member states in the Americas to discuss opportunities for collaboration and coordination in meeting shared objectives to reduce disaster risks in the region and to meet the United Nations' Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) commitments.
