individual and local levels.

For youth: booklet by the young for the young

The ISDR Secretariat invites young people of the world under the age of 26 to send us their personal accounts, essays, poems, and illustrations on how they are contributing to building a culture of prevention. These will be collected and published in a booklet that will serve as an inspiration for decision-makers. The deadline to submit entries is 31 August 2000.

For educators: best examples of disaster
reduction education programmes


The ISDR Secretariat invites all interested individuals and educational institutions to send us best examples of national or local education programmes, which are participatory, interactive and demonstrably contribute to building a culture of prevention. These will be published in a final report which will serve to create an exchange of information and experience between regions. The deadline to submit entries is 31 August 2000.

International photo contest

Like every year, the ISDR Secretariat is holding a world wide photo contest on the theme of the campaign with a first prize consisting of US $2,000. All interested individuals and organisations are encouraged to send entries illustrating disaster reduction and its relevance to the theme of this year’s campaign. The deadline to submit entries is 31 August 2000.

For children: pictures of forest and wildfires

The Secretariat of ISDR has invited all children of the world to send drawings that illustrate forest fires. The final date to send them is the 31st of August, 2000.

International Day for Disaster Reduction

On 11 October 2000, celebrations will take place organized by countries and counterparts. Countries around the world are encouraged to mark this day with special events highlighting the theme of this year’s campaign.
At the United Nations the International Day for Disaster Reduction will be observed as well, including:

  • Message of the United Nations Secretary-General
  • Presentation of the 2000 United Nations Disaster Prevention Award for outstanding achievements in the field of disaster prevention. Applications for the Award and nomination procedures and requirements can be obtained upon request from the ISDR Secretariat.
  • Presentation of the international photo contest award
  • Press conference
  • One-day Internet chat or forum on the theme of the campaign

 

Local Activities and Events

The ISDR Secretariat welcomes all interested individuals and organisations to share with us the events and activities that they plan to organise in order to celebrate the theme of the campaign.

These could include, for example:

  • dissemination of printed material
  • video presentations
  • interactive radio programmes
  • training sessions
  • simulation exercises
  • field trips / visits to disaster sites
  • teacher’s guides
  • educational games
  • tree-planting projects
  • drawing contests
  • essay contests
  • role plays
  • theatre skits
  • school action projects
  • lectures, seminars, workshops in schools and universities articles for the press

The ISDR Secretariat looks forward to your feedback on the above-mentioned activities and encourages you and/or your organisation to write back with proposals for further activities and information on related events.
