Workshop:
Lessons learned from the
Earthquakes occurred in El Salvador in 2001
On
July 4-6, approximately 230 national and international participants met
in San Salvador, El Salvador, in order to analyze the strengths and weaknesses
related to seismic events occurred in El Salvador, and identify future
priority actions on emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness
and response.
During three days,
representatives from the government, health and education sectors, the
media, NGOs, universities, municipalities, and international and regional
organizations constituted working groups to analyze a number of priority
elements related to health, education, human settlements, and communications.
The workshop initiated
with a series of conferences with regards to the causes and consequences
of damage, responses, and social and environmental vulnerability, as well
as geographical and physical impact. These conferences were complemented
by group discussions on specific issues, led by a moderator and a rapporteur,
who provided participants with guidelines designed specifically for these
discussions. This gathering represented a valuable opportunity to exchange
different viewpoints on aspects that must be strengthened in the future.
This event was organized
jointly by the Pan-American Health Organization / World Health Organization
(PAHO/WHO), the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR),
and the Salvadoran Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance.
