When Winds Blow: the story of hurricane Ivan and Grenada

When Winds Blow is the story of Grenada's experience with Hurricane Ivan. It is interpreted and told by the Caribbean's master storyteller Paul Keens-Douglas as only he can, using the gender of comedy to relate the riveting and real life experiences of Grenadians who survived the terror of September 7, 2004.

Hurricane Ivan devastated Grenada on that September afternoon taking the lives of 28 persons, damaging 90% of homes, and leaving EC$2.8 billion in damage. The shock of the devastation and the stress of having to cope with the despairing aftermath affected the entire population, from politician to priest, senior citizen to school child, financier to farmer. As Grenadians pick up the pieces, their experiences are valuable lessons for generating awareness, preparedness, and promoting loss reduction initiatives in other countries in the hurricane belt.

The first track is the complete story, providing insight into the general attitude of persons before the hurricane, during the impact and then aftermath. Tracks two, three, and four deal individually with the three sections: Before, During, and After the hurricane. The story not only relates the experience but also provides guidance on preparedness and longer term loss reduction actions one should take for a hurricane as well as some do's and don'ts during and the hurricane.

This CD was produced with the assistance of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through the Caribbean Hazard Mitigation Capacity Building Programme (CHAMP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through the Caribbean Disaster Management Programme (CADM) - both projects of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA).
