Myths and Realities of Natural Disasters

This is a CD that compiles 14 myths based on beliefs that exist in particular regions. Some of them are:

  • Any kind of assistance in a disaster situation is better than nothing.
  • Disasters are a divine punishment.
  • Disasters are not natural.
  • Men and women are affected equally by a disaster.

Research for developing this product was conducted by analyzing information from CRID’s users, and based on realities and myths that exist in the region. Those concepts deemed valid were analyzed and, based upon the information gathered, other “myths” were extrapolated from them in an attempt to forecast future perceptions.

By identifying specialized information sources, the analysis allowed for a technical substantiation or, rather, a “demystification” of socially formed myth.
