Considering that a first achievement is having sensitized and encouraged the commitment of local government in rural areas, launching the Chocos district as the first resilient city driven by Mayor Macedonio Aburto Gutierrez of the high Andean zone of the province of Yauyos. And the commitment of seven local governments in the high Andean zone of Peru, having succeeded in registering their municipalities to the “Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready” campaign. These districts are: Cacra, Lincha, Azángaro, Huangascar, Madean, Villac and Vitis.
We are currently in the process of implementing the local HFA self-assessment tool to each of the local governments registered in the campaign. Our commitment is to continue to raise awareness among more local governments and community leaders to join this crusade for risk reduction, disaster resilience and adaptation to climate change, as a concerted priority of local governments, leaders and civil society organizations in their development plans and on their agendas.
Throughout history, disasters have disrupted life in the cities and in rural communities, adaptation to climate change, earthquakes, cyclones and emergencies caused by man-made threats are increasingly putting pressure on populations and the prosperity of cities.
