Lima Peru; December 5, 2016 - In order to contribute substantially to the sustainable development of the country, through the active participation of the private sector in collaboration with the public sector and other actors, Peru’s National Chapter of the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE) was created to consolidate a society resilient to disaster.

ARISE is a private sector and private sector initiative, made up of a voluntary group of more than 140 companies and organizations around the world, working together with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to promote the integration of disaster risk reduction into private investment planning, as well as more resilient short- and long-term investments in all industry sectors in a transparent and inclusive manner that generates a positive impact for sustainable development at the local level.

ARISE encourages proactive private sector action to prevent damage to its assets and the establishment of business opportunities related to the integral management of disaster risk, in line with the provisions of the Sendai Framework, with a particular emphasis the role of the private sector in its successful implementation. In fact, it is estimated that on average and worldwide, 70% of future investments will come from the private sector.

Therefore, the consolidation of the National Chapter of ARISE in Peru, together with the newly formed Chapters of Chile and Colombia, reinforces the key role of the private sector in strengthening resilience as a pillar to achieve sustainable development in all countries and territories of the Americas.

The formalization of ARISE-Peru was carried out through the signing of an agreement between UNDRR, through its Regional Office for the Americas, and the National Society of Industries of Peru (SNI), which will serve as the focal point of the Alliance at the national level.

The national chapters of ARISE aim to strengthen the joint capacities of the initiative, to promote commitments and opportunities directly related to the territorial context and to promote new accessions among key actors for disaster risk reduction at the national level.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Ricardo Mena, Head of the UNDRR Regional Office for the Americas and Mr. Andreas von Wedemeyer Knigge, President of SNI; in the presence of Mr. Frank Rojo, Secretary-General of the Lima Chamber of Commerce, as well as Mr. Wilson Farfán Rosas, President of the SIN Committee for Small Industry; Mrs. Ana María Rebaza, National Disaster Response Adviser, OCHA, and Mr. Massimiliano Tozzi, Disaster Risk Management Adviser, UNDP, among other distinguished participants, and with the support of the United States Agency for International Development Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance Abroad (USAID/OFDA).
